I have the same problem trying to get rid of this issue. From that experience, I learned that the easiest way to upgrade an operating system is to backup to CD everything you don’t want to use, format the hard drive and start over after all, all you have to do is insert the Win 98 CD at directcx point in the Win XP install just to prove you have it.
You could try CDRoller or isobuster and see if those help the trial versions will let you see if it can read the files before you buy it.

If you, like me, use other burning software then set this to Manual or Disabled. Looks as if this got popped in the wrong thread. If you burned the disc with DirectCD, then you’d need the Pro version.

I have Nero 6. Without it, your issue is much too difficult to divine.
I’m currently at windows XP SP3, but if someone says windows 7 can do it natively, that’ll be a good excuse to upgrade. It seems to fight with Roxio and since it doesn’t have re-writing capabilites, it’s pretty useless in my book. The time now is It doesn’t hold as much but you can get up to around 2GB flash drivesbut I guarentee it will be worth the money compared to the problems you’re likely to encounter with programs like DirectCD.

My problem is really minor, almost bonehead simple to me – and more of an annoyance: There are other options for saving and transfering information. I’ve been through the mill with those clowns at Roxio, where we all sent so dutifully by the error message.
They seem to stay in the system after you uninstall and new drivers are put in when you install the new roxio, with a xp extension on them. Disable XP built-in CD burning?
